DEDE Adjusts Alternative Energy Target

The National Energy Policy Council has approved that the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency adjust promotion targets for each type of alternative energy in accordance with Thailand’s alternative energy development plan. However, the overall target for alternative energy is maintained at 25% of the country’s energy consumption in 2021, in line with the 10-year Alternative Energy Development Plan 2012-2021. The target follows the three Country Strategies that comprise of the competitiveness enhancement, opportunity creation upon social fairness and equality, and growth in environmental-friendly quality of living

DEDE’s new targets for usage of alternative energy to produce electricity and heat as well as in transport sector are shown in Figure 1-3

The sum of alternative energy targets under the 10-year Alternative Energy Development Plan in 2021 is maintained at 25% as shown in Figure 4.

The adjustment is meant to cope with changing situations, most of which involve an upward revision in tandem with greater demand and higher production capacity such as power from wind, solar, waste, biomass, and inclusion of power production from Napier Grass at 3,000MW and the production of Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) at 1,200 tons. The revision reflects the Energy Ministry’s emphasis on demand and actual capacity to ensure the utmost efficiency of Thailand’s alternative energy usage.
